In 1965 Columbia released an album by the late Johnny Horton which consisted of tapes from Horton’s live performances. Before release, the master was re-recorded with Johnny Cash (acoustic guitar) and the Tennessee Three providing additional instrumental backing. Cash can also be heard giving vocal support at one point on Rock Island Line.

Johnny Cash’s working relationship with Sandy Kelly began when Cash was touring Ireland and heard Kelly’s cover version of ‘Crazy’ on the radio. He called Kelly and invited her to his show. During his performance, Cash invited her up on stage to sing. Cash was so taken with Kelly’s performance that he invited her Nashville where they recorded ‘Woodcarver’ together.

This duet was not planned. Johnny Cash was passing by the recording studios where Julie Andrews was working and when asked to join in, cheerfully agreed.

These tracks were recorded with Johnny Cash’s then son in law, Jack Routh as the major artist. It is thought that Cash added vocal accompaniment to ‘Your Love Is My Refuge’. While it is known that Cash did not contribute vocally to ‘I’m Ragged But I’m Right’, it is unclear whether he added instrumental backing.
