The song was inspired by a dream Cash had. In it he met Queen Elizabeth. When she saw Cash, the queen told him he was like “A thorn tree in a whirlwind”. When he awoke, the phrase stayed with him and drove him to the Bible to look for an answer.

An alternative “early take” of the song appears on the Unearthed box set.
